Great Glazing: 522 Lady Street

rsz_gg_522ladystreet_300The basics: When the design team set out to renovate a 1930s-era cigar, candy store and adjacent warehouse at 522 Lady Street in Columbia, South Carolina, they knew that exterior glass would play a major role in achieving project goals to create a modern office space. The glass creates a contemporary feel that sets off structural elements of the legacy buildings, including red brick walls and white stucco surfaces. Natural light permeates deep within the space, while solar heat gain is managed to keep indoor temperatures comfortable.

“We wanted glass that would showcase the building’s historic features while creating a modern office space that is comfortable and full of natural light,” says architect Josh Boltinhouse, AIA, LEED AP, who adds, “The people who work here love this space.”

The players: Architect, Lambert Architecture + Construction Services; general contractor,McCrory Construction; glass manufacturer, Guardian Industries; independent Guardian Select  fabricator, Aldora Aluminum and Glass Products; independent Glazier Connection member Ace Glass Co.; aluminum supplier, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope
The glass: Guardian Industries delivered both the energy performance and aesthetic features that the designers desired, including the absence of tint and reflectivity. “Rather than creating a monolithic look, we wanted to see right into the space and show off its historical character,” says Boltinghouse. Guardian’s SunGuard SNX 51/23 glass was used for an iconic stair tower visible from the street, all existing window locations and new expanses of glass that overlook the city and nearby Congaree River.

Fabricated by Aldora Aluminum and Glass Products and installed by Ace Glass Co., SunGuard SNX 51/23 glass brings a visible light transmission of 51 percent and a low solar heat gain coefficient of 0.23.

When the firm outgrew its former space across the river, the team of architects and designers moved in themselves and work at 522 Lady Street.

K2-Breezes were chosen to replace the existing Jalousie doors in this Deerfield Beach condominium.  The K2 Breeze meets high design pressure, hurricane requirements while offering ventilation through the single hung window mounted in the upper panel.  Here, the owner elected to use opaque glass panels top and bottom to let in diffused light.

Aldora’s newest product, the FS 300 is being installed in this West Palm Beach retail location.  For this project, Insulated laminated glass is being utilized for both its hurricane resistance and its energy efficiency.
